What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are the tooth replacement option that is most like your natural teeth. They can be used to replace just one tooth or all of your teeth.
The implant is installed by drilling a small hole into the jaw bone and surgically implanting a titanium post. The patient is sent home for a few months to allow the site to heal.
Once the area has healed, the dentist can then attach an abutment to the post and mount a dental crown on top. The crown is custom-made for each patient to match the rest of their teeth.
Benefits of Dental Implants
The most notable benefit of dental implants is the fact that they are very much like your natural teeth. The titanium post effectively replaces the root of your tooth, giving the crown the strength and support it needs. In other words, you can eat apples and corn on the cob worry-free.
Taking care of your dental implants is also the same as taking care of your natural teeth. Simply brush and floss twice a day and visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups.
When you are missing several teeth, you run the risk of bone loss in your jaw. This is what causes that sunken face look you may have noticed on older people who have lost their teeth. Dental implants support your jaw bone just like your natural teeth, unlike dentures which in some cases can speed up bone loss.
Finally, dental implants are basically a permanent option. As long as you take proper care of your dental implants you can expect them to last a lifetime. If you struggle with clenching or grinding your teeth, we can fit you with a nightguard to prevent damage to your implants.
Dental Implant Uses
There are four basic types of dental implants we can use to replace your teeth.
A Single Implant
The most basic implant replaces a single tooth. It can be made to fit in with your other teeth. A properly installed implant will never decay or cause other problems for you, later on, making them a great long-term investment.
A Small Bridge
Implants can also be used to replace a few teeth in a row. Thankfully, you don’t have to have a post implanted for every tooth. A small bridge can be made of a few teeth in a row with one implant at either end to hold it in place. A big advantage to this over a typical dental bridge is that the dentist won’t have to grind on any of the surrounding teeth to attach the bridge.
An Entire Arch
Dental implants also make an excellent alternative to wearing dentures when you have lost all your teeth. An entire arch can be crafted and mounted on as few as four implants. If you have already experienced bone loss, five or six implants may be necessary to properly support all those teeth.
A Removable Denture
We can also make a removable denture that is mounted on implants. This is a healthier, more comfortable option when compared to traditional dentures. Instead of putting pressure on the gums, the implants transfer the pressure to the bone, helping to avoid the sunken face problem so many denture wearers experience.
